A study looking at the occurrence of acute respiratory infection (ARI), split the participants into 3 groups:
Exercised for 8 weeks
Practised mindfulness for 8 weeks
The results? Of the 149 people who completed the trial, there were
27 ARI episodes and 257 days of ARI illness in the mindfulness group,
26 episodes and 241 illness days in the exercise group
40 episodes and 453 days in the control group.
Mean global severity was
144 for mindfulness
248 for exercise
358 for control.
Compared with control, global severity was significantly lower for meditation. Relating to work:
67 ARI related days off work missed in the control group,
32 in the exercise group
16 in the mindfulness group
The conclusion is that mindfulness can be as effective as exercise.
