As a CEO or leader, would your employees recommend your company to their friends and family as a great place to work? What makes us really love the company we work for?
In October 2020 Forbes surveyed over 160,000 full-time and part-time workers from 58 countries. They specifically looked at businesses with operations in multiple locations. The employees were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to family and friends. Also they looked at how their employers had responded to the COVID-19 crisis as well as other parameters.
The final list included 750 multinational companies globally with HQ’s in 45 countries. Here are the top 10.
Samsung South - Korea
Amazon - USA
IBM - USA
Microsoft - USA
LG - South Korea
Apple - USA
Adobe - USA
Alphabet - USA
Siemens - Germany
Bosch - Germany
The USA dominates this list, with China coming in at number 14 and 50 with Huawei and Alibaba. Japan at number 22 with Honda and Saudi Arabia coming in with Aramco at number 26.
So what makes these companies amazing to work for? How are the people leaders driving these companies to these great reviews?
We need to look at the type of companies first. Software and technology companies dominate the list which is shown here. This is because they are able to move to remote working far more easily this gives them a far better response from the people who work with them.
However, a true factor throughout has been the ability to coach teams through change with compassion and empathy and maintaining security throughout. Investment in safety, security and empathy in the workplace for companies like Amazon, have meant that they are now the most desirable to work for.
There are more and more corporate Covid-19 response trackers like the one here from Just Capital. Therefore companies need to ensure they take note of the most important areas for showing response throughout their day to day operations and people management as well as through a crisis.
With the high performing talent of Gen Z looking at a holistic picture when choosing a company to work for, including the compassionate and CSR aspects, it is important to coach your people honestly and completely through any challenging times. Show that you offer them security. Show them that if there is a crisis, the company will act in their best interests. If you do not, the internet will tell them how you are performing!
The most important aspects to coach your company through to excellence, high performance and happiness:
Communicate change effectively and throughout the WHOLE organization.
Speak to ALL of your people and ask questions to understand how they are feeling. Encourage the quieter members of staff to come forward. Remember to be inclusive. Coach them rather than train/ inform them through this. Choose the right people to help you do this.
Show a degree of transparency relating to WHY an action is carried out and the benefits for all of the people involved. Short and long term.
Really lead with compassion so it is embedded into every person in the company. ESPECIALLY your team leaders.
Be authentic as a company.
Embrace and encourage changes in technology to advance your company communications and efficiency.
All of the above are encouraged in the top companies to work for. As A CEO or leader do you do the same? If not now is the time to initiate change. If you do not, there may be other companies who will be picking up your top talent first!
